Eden Pure Infrared Heaters – Are Their Ads Just Blowing a Lot of Hot Air?

IF you have ever come across those infomercials touting the Eden Pure Infrared Heater, I bet you would have been tempted by their pitch to shell out $400 for one. I know I was and I live in the sub-tropics!

This brand of portable space heater claims using it will slash your home heating bill by up to 50 percent! (I use the exclamation point because the presenter does not speak, he shouts, because it is all so very exciting.)

Small children and a cat frolic near the Eden Pure’s red glow, adding weight to its safety claims. And it probably is. Because, as Consumer Reports says, it is not very good. In their review of the wood encased infrared heater, they rated it next to last, saying it just did not measure up to other, far cheaper brands. They added that it would be be nearly impossible to have the type of savings on home heating bills they advertise. And with a $400 price tag, it would take a while for you to make money on any savings to pay for the heater.

But operating a space heater can be handy during the cold winter months. Experts recommend that if you are going to use them, then do not use the central heating for the biggest savings. This is safer than closing the vents on rooms not in use. In fact, even though you will come across that kind of advice, it is a big no-no that can damage your system.

Avoid getting a space heater that uses propane or kerosene unless it is for outdoor use. These types are the ones that you will hear about every winter for causing carbon monoxide poisoning when someone used them indoors. And choose a model with an feature that automatically shuts off the device if it is knocked over or over heats.

As for Eden Pure, even if the newer model has improved over the one tested by Consumer Reports, there are many space heaters, according to owner reviews, that are far less expensive and work way better.

As an electrician, I know one thing – a watt is a watt. Be it infrared or direct heat, a watt is a watt. And you can’t squeeze blood out of a turnip and you can’t squeeze two watts from one watt. Your little portable (weighs less than two pounds – doesn’t need wheels) heaters you can pick up for less than $40.00 (1/10th the cost of an EdinPure) use anywhere from 1500 to 1850 watts and have a small fan to blow the heated air around just like the Edin Pure. As for Allergies, the only allergens you are exposed to are the allergens already in your room. While Edin Pure filters the air, so do a lot of HEPS air filter units and cost less than half the cost of the Edin Pure AND they work all the time, not just when it gets cold. Most of these little units also have a tip-over safety and, if you are worried about tipping one over, just clamp it are mount it permanently to a surface like a shelf or a table. I have a little 1800 watt unit that is in a plastic case that never gets hot but the heater works just as efficiently as an Edin Pure.
