Why Use a Folding Mobility Scooter?

For a device with the word mobility in their name, electric mobility scooters can be notoriously hard to transport. If you need to take your scooter with you on a long car trip, most mobility scooters do not quite live up to their name. Full size mobility scooters are difficult to transport. A wheelchair that folds may solve the travel problem, but it will not provide the same level of comfort and support that scooters can.

Provided that you have enough truck space, the folding scooter models solve the problem. Ideally the device should fold in half. The folded scooter will still take up a great deal of trunk space. The other second important factor for the person who will end up transporting the scooter is how much it weighs. A scooter that is too heavy may not get transported at all, and a scooter that is too light may not be able to support the weight of its rider. A balance must be struck between the weight of the scooter and the comfort of the rider.

Although the folding scooter models may be less comfortable than the larger models, this does not have to be the case. Before trying any mobility device, the person who will use it should sit in it to make sure the seat is comfortable. Folding scooters will have smaller seats than their larger cousins, but they can be just as comfortable.

Folding scooters actually cost less than their larger counterparts. If the person who needs the cheap used mobility scooter has someone who can drive them to the places they need to go regularly, getting a folding scooter may be a good investment over a larger model. The cost of the electric mobility devices may prohibit a person from owning more than one, even if many insurance programs do cover the costs of these devices.

People who are looking into folding scooters might want to check out http://www.stowboard.net. The Stowboard has been categorized as a folding skateboard, but it’s low center of gravity, smooth ride, and radical wheels make it more like a folding scooter without a handle. And it folds up to about 11 inches for easy stowing in a backpack or locker. I use mine with public transportation. I have a friend who skates around airports on his when he flies.
