There are basically two types of touch screen computers. The first is a convertible notebook computer such as the HP touch screen laptops that are popular with their flashy imprint finish and aesthetically pleasing contours. The second is less popular among normal users and more specific to certain industries that rely on inputting data into a computer in a manner that makes sense. These are the slate tablet PC which are single state devices and, unlike the convertible laptops, do not have keyboards or swivel screens. In fact, the primary difference between the two is that the slate PC is simply a large screen through which all commands are input.
The convertible is much more fun in the sense that it is a versatile touch screen laptop tablet device. It initially looks and feels like a traditional laptop and can do all the things a regular laptop does. But when the time calls for a tablet, the screen swivels 180 degrees and folds down over the keyboard. This turns the laptop into tablet mode where it can be used as a notepad for creating handwritten notes capable of drawing diagrams and other scribbles that typical word processing does not allow.
The slate PC is a static device that does not convert. It is the single function tablet and good for specific jobs that require the user to input commands through the screen. It is good for jobs where the user will be on his or her feet throughout most of the time. A nurse that is running alongside a doctor and taking notes for example. Or a waiter taking your order while standing at the end of your table might also use such a computer. The touch screens on new cash registers are also closely related to these computers and also have the same specific programmed software to carry out specific commands.
